Breast Surgery FAQs

What breast procedures does Dr Anh Nguyen offer?

Dr Anh Nguyen, a Specialist Plastic Surgeon in Rivervale, Perth, performs a range of breast procedures. These include breast augmentation, breast lift, breast reduction, breast lift with enlargement, implant removal, implant replacement, asymmetry correction, tuberous breast correction, revision surgery and fat transfer breast augmentation. Each has its own page with more detail. The right option depends on your anatomy, your health and what you would like to change.

How do I know which breast procedure is right for me?

The right procedure depends on what you want to change: volume, position, size or symmetry. Broadly, an augmentation adds volume, a lift raises and reshapes the breast, and a reduction removes weight and tissue. Many people have more than one concern, such as droop and volume loss after pregnancy. A consultation with a Specialist Plastic Surgeon, including an examination and measurements, is the best way to understand your options and their limits.

What is the difference between a breast lift and a breast augmentation?

A breast lift changes the position and shape of the breast, while a breast augmentation changes its size. A breast lift removes excess skin and raises the nipple and breast tissue, but it does not add volume. A breast augmentation uses implants or your own fat to increase volume, but it does not correct significant droop. When both concerns exist, they can sometimes be addressed together in a breast lift with enlargement.

Can breast surgery be done without implants?

Yes, several breast procedures do not use implants. A breast lift reshapes and raises the breast using your own tissue, and a breast reduction removes tissue and skin. Fat transfer can add a modest amount of volume using fat taken from another part of your body, although some fat is reabsorbed and more than one session may be needed. Whether an implant-free approach suits you depends on your goals and anatomy.

Can breast surgery be combined with other procedures?

Sometimes, yes. Breast procedures can be combined with each other, such as a lift with an augmentation, or with body procedures like abdominoplasty, which is common in post pregnancy surgery. Combining operations can mean one anaesthetic and one recovery period, but it also means a longer operation, which can increase certain risks. Whether combining is sensible depends on your health, the procedures involved and the total operating time.

When is the best time to have breast surgery after pregnancy?

Most surgeons advise waiting until your breasts have stopped changing after pregnancy and breastfeeding. Breasts can take several months to settle once breastfeeding ends, so waiting around six months or longer is commonly suggested. Being at a stable weight also helps. If you are planning more children, a future pregnancy can change your result, so it is worth talking through timing at your consultation before making a decision.

Do I need a referral for breast surgery?

Yes, you need a referral from your GP or another medical specialist before your first consultation with Dr Anh Nguyen. For cosmetic breast surgery, Australian rules also require at least two consultations before surgery, one of them in person with the surgeon, and a cooling-off period of at least seven days after consent before surgery goes ahead.

Is breast surgery covered by Medicare?

Cosmetic breast surgery is not covered by Medicare. A rebate is possible for some breast procedures, but only if you meet the clinical criteria set for that item. One example is a breast reduction for heavy breasts that cause neck or shoulder pain. Others include some cases of significant droop and certain developmental breast conditions. You may need photographs or imaging as evidence. Whether you qualify can only be worked out after an examination, and you will usually still have out-of-pocket costs. Check with Medicare and your health fund before surgery.

What does Specialist Plastic Surgeon mean?

A Specialist Plastic Surgeon is a doctor registered with Ahpra as a specialist in plastic surgery after completing accredited surgical training. In Australia, this usually means Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, shown as FRACS (Plast). Dr Anh Nguyen holds this qualification, and her registration number is MED0001193810. You can check any doctor’s registration and specialty on the public Ahpra register before booking a consultation.

Is Dr Anh Nguyen a female plastic surgeon?

Yes. Dr Anh Nguyen is a female Specialist Plastic Surgeon who consults at 88 Belmont Ave, Rivervale, in Perth. Some patients feel more at ease discussing breast concerns with a female surgeon. Even so, the most important things to consider when choosing any surgeon are their qualifications, training and experience in the procedure you are considering. You are also encouraged to seek a second opinion before deciding on surgery.

What are the common risks of breast surgery?

All breast surgery carries risks. General risks include reactions to anaesthesia, bleeding, infection, poor wound healing, visible scarring, changes in breast or nipple sensation, asymmetry and the possible need for further surgery. Implant procedures carry additional risks, such as capsular contracture and implant rupture. Your individual risks depend on the procedure, your health and factors such as smoking. They are discussed in detail before you give consent. See surgical risks for more.

How long is recovery after breast surgery?

This varies with the procedure you have. Many people are back to light day-to-day activities after one to two weeks. Heavy lifting and hard exercise usually need to wait for about six weeks, and you will wear a supportive bra while you heal. Swelling takes a few months to go down, and scars keep fading and softening for a year or longer. Dr Anh will give you aftercare instructions for your procedure and adjust them as you recover.

The information on this page is general in nature and does not replace individual medical advice. All surgical procedures carry risks. Results vary between individuals. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified Specialist Plastic Surgeon. Medicare and private health insurance eligibility is assessed individually and cannot be confirmed before a consultation. A referral from your GP or another medical specialist is required.
